A conservatory that is unusable half the year is not a broken room — it is a room with the wrong roof. The walls and foundations are usually fine. That is why the fix costs a fraction of what the conservatory did, and why the outcome feels like gaining a room you already paid for.
Why it happens
Old polycarbonate and early glass roofs do almost nothing to stop heat moving through them. In summer the sun loads the room faster than any fan can empty it; in winter the heat you pump in leaves through the roof as fast as it arrives. Blinds, reflective film and portable heaters treat the symptom at running cost forever — they do not change what the roof is made of, which is the actual problem.
The three genuine fixes
- High-performance glass roof
- Modern solar-control, self-cleaning glass reflects a large share of summer heat and holds warmth far better in winter, while keeping the bright, sky-lit character. The right choice when light is the reason you love the room.
- Solid or hybrid roof conversion
- A lightweight insulated roof — tiled outside, plastered inside, with glazed panels or a roof lantern if you want to keep some sky — turns the conservatory into a genuine all-year room that holds an even temperature. This is the transformation most people are imagining when they say they want the room back.
- Rebuild
- If the frames and base have reached the end of their life too, replacing the whole structure — or stepping up to an orangery — can be the honest answer. It is the most expensive route, which is exactly why we only recommend it when the survey shows the existing structure cannot carry a new roof.
