What can we fix?
“My home is cold — and the heating cannot keep up”
A room that never warms up is rarely a mystery. Heat leaves a house through its weakest surfaces, and in most homes those surfaces are the glass, the frames and the gaps around the openers. If you sit near a window and feel cold with the heating on, the window is telling you where the money is going.
The fix is not always replacement — sometimes it is a hardware adjustment, and sometimes it is nothing to do with us at all. Here is how we work it out.
Where the heat is actually going
Four culprits explain almost every cold room we survey:
- Old or minimum-spec glazing
- Single glazing, or double glazing from the 1990s fitted to the minimum standard of its day, loses heat at roughly twice the rate of a current A-rated unit. The room feels cold near the window even when the thermostat says it should not.
- Frames without a thermal break
- Early aluminium frames conduct the cold straight through the metal. If the frame itself is icy to the touch on a winter morning, this is you.
- Draughts at the openers
- Hinges wear and gaskets harden, so the sash no longer pulls tight against the seal. You feel it as a moving thread of cold air, and hear it on a windy night.
- A conservatory pulling heat out of the house
- An old glass or polycarbonate roof turns the conservatory into a radiator pointed at the sky — and if the doors between it and the house stay open, it drains the rooms next to it.
What we would do about it
In honest order. If the frames are sound and one opener whistles, the answer may be adjustment and new seals — a small job, and we will say so. If the glazing is the weak point across the house, replacement windows with A-rated (or A++) double glazing change how the whole house holds heat; triple glazing earns its place on north-facing rooms and exposed plots, and we will tell you which of your rooms justify it rather than quoting it everywhere. If the cold room is the conservatory, a solid or hybrid roof conversion does more than any window can.
Every option comes specified in writing after a survey, so you can see exactly what is proposed for each opening — and compare it fairly against anyone else.
When the answer is not windows
Sometimes the survey finds that the windows are fine and the problem is elsewhere — an uninsulated loft, a radiator undersized for the room, a suspended floor breathing cold air. We do not sell any of those fixes, and we will still tell you when one of them is the real answer. A survey that talks you out of buying windows costs you nothing and tells you the truth.
